Emergency phones still provide security

On Oct. 30, 1999, a McDonald’s employee was robbed and fatally shot in the Main Street restaurant’s parking lot shortly after closing. The incident triggered fear throughout the Bradley community. Within three months, emergency blue light phones were installed on campus. Since its introduction in 2000, the emergency phones have provided students with a sense of security. “Emergency preparedness is always a good thing to have,” said senior physics major Ryan Crawford. “It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it [...]

Things about islam and being aware

The Muslim Student Association hosted Islam Awareness Week this past week to help students, faculty and members of the community better understand and appreciate the religion of Islam. This year’s theme was “Islamophobia in the Western Media.” Islamophobia is a phenomenon in which individuals harbor an irrational prejudice, hatred or fear of Islam and Muslims, believing that Islam is a violent political ideology rather than a religion. MSA hosted several speakers throughout the week with the purpose of addressing this misunderstanding. “[We are hosting these [...]

Lydia’s Lounge will trade grease for sweets this weekend

Starting this Friday, the menu of Lydia’s Lounge will feature a menu geared toward students with a sweet tooth. Leaving behind traditional late night greasy foods, the lounge will now be filled with desserts. “We are trying to make this a destination spot, something different and new,” said Director of Dining Services Ron Gibson. “We certainly do not want to compete with Center Court.” The idea was conceived during a Student Senate meeting, and freshman Holly Alquire has made it a personal project to bring [...]

Greek community not seeing new sorority any time soon

Bradley’s Panhellenic community will not be seeing expansion any time soon, but that may change in the future. Director of Fraternity and Sorority Development Jesse Koch said welcoming a new sorority to campus is something that has been discussed in the past and is a topic that will be revisited next fall after recruitment. “Our community is growing and some chapters are getting too big,” said Katie Clemens, 2010-11 Panhellenic Recruitment Chair. “Also if Bradley is looking to have larger graduating classes, it would make [...]

Condom distribution program proving to be successful

Two weeks have gone by since the condom distribution program began in residence hall offices, and program administrators said they have received nothing but positive feedback. “The distribution has gone smoothly,” said Executive Director of Residential life and Leadership Nathan Thomas. “Everyone seems respectful of the program. There have only been a few minor things, but no blatant problems. Overall I think it has been fairly successful.” For the first time on campus, condoms are available to students in dorms or the Wellness Center free [...]

A clean bill of health for Glasser

A clean bill of health for Glasser

University President Joanne Glasser is recovering from surgery and returned to campus earlier this week. Glasser announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December and underwent surgery later in the month. “No one really ever thinks they will be struck by cancer and hear those words, ‘you have cancer,’” she said. “I eat healthy, I take care of myself, there is no breast cancer in my family. But this insidious disease can land on any doorstep. No one is immune.” This is the second time [...]
