Brave Pitch

Nine students waited in anticipation Wednesday night as they prepared one final time to present their ideas to a panel of judges.

At the third annual Brave Pitch Competition, sponsored by the Turner Center for Entrepreneurship, students were given three minutes to impress panel of judges and a small audience.

The $250 grand prize went to freshman Emma Heth, a member of the academic exploration program. She pitched her idea for “Toddlers in Tiaras,” a princess-themed party service that brings festivities to the client’s front door.

She said that it is a hassle trying to cram children into vans to transport them to a location where they may get lost and can’t be constantly supervised.

“The startup costs would only be $1,000 since the only thing we would need to buy are the makeup and the boas, which the girls get to keep,” Heth said.

The second place $100 prize went to senior political science and criminal justice studies double major Brad Webster and his partner, senior television arts major Shayla Eddins, who pitched their idea for a magnetized button women could wear on their shoulders to stop their purses from falling. Their pitch was the only one to have an actual demonstration of the product.

The final prize was awarded to sophomore dietetics major Sarah Wagner, whose idea for a tattoo-like adhesive that doubled as a breath freshener earned her $50.

Heth said she is unsure if she will compete in the competition again next year, but she enjoyed this year’s opportunity.

“It was a really cool experience, so I will definitely consider it,” Heth said.
