Freshman stars in fall musical

This year’s fall musical has sprung into action, bringing with it a few twists.

Freshman Zach Olson takes the stage as the leading male in Bradley’s modern rendition of the 19th century musical “Spring Awakening.”

A Wisconsin native, Olson said he was inspired by his parents to pursue his passion for singing as a music business major. Dancing, acting and playing the piano are just a few of his talents as a performer.

Having only been on the Hilltop a short time, Olson has already begun to make his mark on the main stage by landing the lead of Melchior Gabor. Described as a “radical, developing teenager,” Olson said the character of Gabor was difficult to prepare for in the beginning stages.

“I’m a freshman, [and] I’m in a big show,” Olson said. “Once I met the cast and found out how nice everyone was, I knew I was putting everything out there, and it was a lot easier to cope with.”

“Spring Awakening” is a rock musical set in Germany where teenagers address controversial topics such as abortion, masturbation, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide, all while trying to “awaken” their own sexuality.

Interim chairperson of the department of theatre arts and director Scott Kanoff said he is excited to show the audience the time and effort the cast has put into the performance.

“I think the audience should expect to be moved by a really good story, beautiful music and a truthful depiction of the journey to be young adults,” he said.

“Spring Awakening” runs Sept. 25 through Oct. 5 in the Hartmann Center for the Performing Arts.

“This play has all the feelings everyone has, and I hope the audience understands it’s OK to discover things in a bad way,” Olson said.
