Students snap selfies to raise money

Whether it was #nofilter or #valencia, Bradley students took selfies last week as part of a fundraising competition.
For Students Helping Students Week, Bradley Ambassadors encouraged Bradley students to participate in the Selfie Challenge and raise money for students in need of textbooks and other educational materials.
“The purpose of the event was for students to take selfies with [professors, coaches and alumni] or in places on campus that are a result of alumni donations,” said adviser for the Bradley Ambassadors Philip Thompson. “We wanted [the event] to be fun and interactive.”
From April 21-24, students tweeted their selfies to @BUAmbassadors97 with #BRAVEselfie.
The Bradley Ambassador Twitter account received more than 150 selfies over the four days, helping the Bradley Ambassadors exceed their $1,000 goal.
While Students Helping Students week is an annual event, this marked the first year the Selfie Challenge was a part of the event.
“This idea came during a meeting in October of 2013,” Thompson said. “The Ambassadors brought the idea to life.”
“[Students] have a list of guidelines that were issued to breakdown what selfies qualified and how much each was worth,” Thompson said. “The person taking the most selfies each day of the week won a prize.”
A “regular selfie” was worth $1. Selfies could be taken with professors, alumni, athletics coaches or the Lydia statue to raise the worth of their selfies by up to $75.
Thompson said event proceeds were donated to the Students Helping Students fund, which has been set up to provide assistance for students who need help purchasing books.
