Summer construction continues Geisert Hall renovations

Screen Shot 2013-04-18 at 10.21.10 PMMore changes are in store for the the hilltop this summer.

The main construction project for the summer will be Geisert Hall, Interim Vice President of Student Affairs Nathan Thomas said.

In order to complete the second year of a two-part project, Geisert will see renovations for restrooms on floors two through six, as floors seven through 10 were completed last summer.

Last year, the bathrooms in the lobby were redone, and plans for this summer include piping to be reworked. The office will have a new look as well.

“When you walk in, it will look similar, but definitely different,” Thomas said.

The project is estimated to take all summer, beginning the Monday following finals week. The building will not reopen until students return for fall semester.

All of the construction will occur inside of Geisert, and any students staying on campus will stay in different buildings. According to Thomas, students staying on campus this summer will not be affected.

“The students who will remain on campus will stay in Lovelace, orientation students will be in Wendle and camps will stay in [University] Hall,” Thomas said.

As for students currently residing in Geisert, many believe these changes necessary.

“It will simply create a better attitude around the residence hall and with the updated restrooms along with the attached cafeteria, it’ll make Geisert the place to live for incoming freshmen,” said sophomore psychology major Brian Deal.

Deal said updates of the lobby and office would not hurt as well.

“We had a pipe burst due to the severe rainfall this,” he said.  “Little things like getting that fixed and updated would go a long way.”

The current updates are well-received by students, and they said they are looking forward to more.

“I think the new renovations are wonderful, and I am excited to see the remaining floors completed for the fall semester,” said senior nursing major Emily Smith.

Deal said Geisert’s entrance will be noticed first.

“The office and lobby are also the first thing families and students see,” Deal said. Getting those renovated will make people think much more highly of Geisert.”

Even though the changes are minor, there are many people on campus that are anticipating the upgrades.

“With all of these intended renovations, it would make Geisert the place to live which is very exciting,” Deal said. “It’s always nice to see this campus improving and becoming the best it possibly can be.”
