It’s the most wonderful time of the year

It’s an amazing time to be a sports fan.

The NBA playoffs are just getting started, but there’s no real point in worrying about them too much yet; they’ll still be playing in June. Major League Baseball’s season has gone on for about a month, and the good teams are starting to rise to the top of their leagues

The NFL will continue its quest to dominate television, even when the teams aren’t playing, by giving us an extra two weeks to get annoyed by the constant coverage of the NFL Draft in May. In the NHL, the chase for the Stanley Cup has begun. I can’t say much more than that about the league though, since I don’t watch the NHL. I never have.

Scrolling through my Twitter feed during Blackhawk games feels like I decided to switch the language over to French for no reason. I don’t understand anything people are saying, I can’t figure out why they’re upset with calls and the players people mention sound like they’re made up.

But somehow, even with all the words and players I don’t understand, I’m starting to get more and more interested in the sport. I’ve been told that this is the perfect time to try, since the NHL playoffs are arguably the most exciting part of the season.

You can make that argument for every single sport that’s doing something right now. What better time to start to fall in love with baseball than now, when the season is still young? It’s better to experience the entire roller coaster ride that is the MLB regular season than to jump in at the end.

Don’t get me wrong, the playoffs are just as exciting as the regular season is at times. But there’s no point in skipping the entire regular season to the end and just watching the postseason. You don’t skip movies to the end, why would you do it for baseball?

This is the perfect time to jump into the NFL Draft as well. If you haven’t followed the league all that closely, odds are you haven’t grown nearly as tired of the draft talk that’s been going on since the combine in February.

It’s an entertaining process to look at from a distance, especially with the wage system paving the way for more trades to be made in the draft, meaning you never know who will make a big splash and move up to grab someone.

The NBA playoffs are starting too. The quest to prevent a Heat three-peat is on, and it’ll be fun to watch the other teams in the league with a chance at the title, like the Pacers, Thunder and Spurs, try to dethrone King James.

Even if you haven’t watched any of these sports before, there’s no time like the present to get involved. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, sports fans. Don’t let it fly by.
