Men’s golf triumphs in Normal, women prep for home invite

Teeing off for the I-74 challenge on Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Illinois, the Bradley men’s golf team got an early taste of an Missouri Valley Conference opponent.

While senior Lyle Burns and freshman Drake Bushong tied for medalist honors during the challenge, this invite was somewhat personal for Bushong.

“It reminded me of a summer tournament because I knew a lot of the guys that play on [the] Illinois State [golf team],” Bushong said. “I don’t want to say that it was a friendly competition, since we are rivals, but it was fun to see some familiar faces and play a course that I have played well at before.”

In the 21-person field, both Bushong and Burns equaled par with two 71s, tying with IUPUI’s Michael Johnson for the top spot.

The women’s golf team had a week off, but stay home this week as they prepare for the Bradley Invitational.

Head coach Mary Swanson said it will be nice to play at home as opposed to flying all over the country for invitationals.

“[The players] love playing at home,” Swanson said. “There’s knowledge of the course … but, you still need to take care of business.”

The invitational at WeaverRidge Golf Club is also the final home invitational for seniors Danielle Lemek, Jenna Roadley and Allison Walsh.
