One-on-One: What is the best sports movie?

Remember The Titans

With Kevin Costner’s latest foray into the sporting world hitting theatres today, we decided we’d debate which sports movie deserves the crown of best all-time. It’s clear to me that movie is “Remember the Titans.”

The movie came out in 1998. It stars Denzel Washington and includes a pre-“Scrubs” Donald Faison in it’s cast, which is a plus.

The movie itself is based off of a true story, but as with most movies, not everything in it is true. I don’t care, though. It still does a great job interweaving the sports world with racial issues the nation faced at the time.

There are so many scenes in the movie that stand out. The jog through the woods to Gettysburg, the scene in the locker room where they begin to sing “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” by the Temptations and the hospital scenes at the end all come to mind.

I’ve never heard of or seen “Fever Pitch.” So I can’t really pass judgment on it. But when I do get a chance to see it, I can’t imagine it’ll come anywhere near “Remember the Titans”.

The combination of the acting, the story itself and the way the entire package is presented make it clear: “Remember the Titans” is the best sports movie of all time. Period.

Miracle

“Miracle” is one of the most motivational and inspirational sports movies that display the heart of the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team.

“Miracle” is the best movie because of the great example of leadership from Coach Herb Brooks.  The speeches that Brooks gave were motivational throughout the movie.  One of the best parts of the movie is the speech he gives before the U.S. played the U.S.S.R.

The biggest moment of the 1980 Olympics was when the U.S. met the U.S.S.R. in the hockey tournament.  The Soviet Union was by far the best team, but the U.S. had the advantage of playing in New York.  With the Cold War in full swing, the game was full of patriotism from Americans across the nation.

Hockey is one of the four major professional sports in America.  This movie fits the bill for sports fans because it is one of the most historic games in U.S. history.

This movie is the best because it exemplifies great leadership, it is filled with motivational lines and it displays American patriotism during a scary time due to the threat of a nuclear war.
