One-on-one: Who is the nation’s top college football team?

Miami Hurricanes

BY NICK KONOW

After a wild weekend of college football, where four of the top-10 teams in the nation lost, it seems only one thing is certain this season – The Miami Hurricanes.

The Canes are, without a doubt, the best team in the nation. The College Football Playoff Committee ranking them third is an absolute outrage. Miami has proven itself time-and-time again this season, and there shouldn’t be any doubt about whether this team means business

Two weeks ago, Miami took down then-13th-ranked Virginia Tech 28-10. For those who still weren’t convinced, they should be now, as the Canes blew the doors off of third-ranked Notre Dame in last Saturday’s 41-8 dominating victory.

The 2017 Hurricanes have the swagger of the 2001 National Championship squad. Their high-flying, hard-hitting defense sets the tone and images of Hurricane defenders wearing the turnover chain keeps opposing offenses up at night.

Miami has overcome every challenge thrown at them this season en route to a 9-0 record. Before their matchup with the Fighting Irish even began last Saturday, the Hurricanes had already clinched the ACC Coastal Division title, setting them up a date with Clemson in the ACC title game.

Kevin will say that Alabama is the best team in the nation. In prior seasons, I would’ve agreed with him, but this year, he’s wrong. The Crimson Tide are banged up and haven’t been challenged at all this season. This is not the same Alabama team as in years past. They’ve lost a multitude of great players to the NFL and are vulnerable to an upset.

If U didn’t know, now U do: The Miami Hurricanes are the best football team in the nation.

Alabama Crimson Tide

BY KEVIN LINDGREN

Very few things are certain in life: death, taxes and Alabama football. For the past several years, the Crimson Tide dominated college football while solidifying themselves as a dynasty – winning four National Championships in a seven-year span. At the end of this season, it will be five championships in an eight-year span.

After a crushing loss to Deshaun Watson and the Clemson Tigers in the national title game last season, the Tide has come roaring back with a vengeance. Though they graduated several players to the NFL last season, Nick Saban has his team in the midst of another title hunt.

Among the talented Southeastern Conference, Alabama boasts a perfect 10-0 record. Just like championship teams of the past, The zero in the Tide’s loss column is a result of their elite defense. This year’s squad features the likes of shutdown corner Minkah Fitzpatrick, run stuffing defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne and hard-hitting safety Ronnie Harrison.

Most of Alabama’s critics are skeptical of the offense, but the Tide have enough weapons to hang with anyone. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has proven he can beat teams both with his legs and his arm. Receiver Calvin Ridley is one of the top pass catchers in the game. And when times get tough, they have Bo Scarbrough in the back field to hand the ball off to.

Nick may try to hype up Miami’s defense, but the team lacks much-needed playoff experience. The Canes also don’t have any standout players on the offensive side of the ball, which will end up costing them.

The Hurricanes can keep their chain – the only bling the Crimson Tide needs is the ring.
