Sports Brief: Wichita State leaves the Missouri Valley Conference

Last Friday, Wichita State announced they will be leaving the Missouri Valley Conference to join the American Athletic Conference beginning in the fall of 2017.

The Wichita State men’s basketball team has been considered one of the best mid-major programs in the country, making the NCAA tournament in each of the last six seasons. The Shockers earned three Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Final Four from 2012 to 2017.

The departure of Wichita State leaves men’s and women’s basketball and softball with nine teams and baseball with seven teams in the MVC. The MVC said it will be actively looking to replace Wichita State.
