Bradley students and their siblings will be able to see a break dancing group with a unique spin tomorrow night as part of the Activities Council of Bradley University’s annual Siblings Weekend.
Brakesk8, a break-dancing roller-skating group, will perform tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Markin Center. Brakesk8 has participated in MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” in 2008 and on “America’s Got Talent,” in addition to touring nationwide.
“We are also really excited to have Brakesk8,” said Kyrsta Schauer, the ACBU Siblings Weekend Coordinator. “[This] is something new that not only ACBU has done before, but siblings weekend as well.”
Opening for Breaksk8 are the dance groups Kim’s Dance Academy, Orchesis and The Last Souls.
Junior psychology major Anna Murr will be performing with Orchesis before Breaksk8’s performance tomorrow night. She said she is excited to see what the group has to offer.
“These guys will be hip-hop dancing on skates, which I think will be really cool,” she said. “It will be exciting for siblings who have watched them on national TV and now get to see them live on campus.”
Breaksk8’s performance is just one of the many events offered for students and siblings this weekend.
With a registration fee of $25 per sibling, students and siblings receive a t-shirt, free admission to the woman’s basketball game, a pizza party and can attend events held in the Markin Center. For an additional cost, students and siblings could register for brunch on Saturday and Sunday and attend sporting events in the Peoria Civic Center.
“I’ve seen how much time and effort gets put into this weekend and I’m really excited to see how it all plays out,” said freshman public relations major Sydney Yeazel, who is on the siblings weekend committee for next year and will be helping out at this weekend’s events.
ACBU will also host “Fiestas” for students and their siblings tonight and tomorrow from 9 p.m. to midnight at the Markin center. Siblings can decorate cacti and mini sombreros, get henna tattoos and caricatures and participate in salsa dancing. Freshman family and consumer science major Ashley Swank said her 21 year old brother is coming to visit her this weekend.
“We’re not going to all of the events but we are going to see the men’s basketball game and The Muppets,” she said. “Other than that I’m going to show him around, and we might check out the [ACBU Markin events.] I don’t get to spend much time with him so I’m excited to see him and he’s even more excited than I am.”
Schauer said they did better in number of registered siblings this year and are hoping students come out for the free events this weekend as well.
“We usually have 200 to 250 students and siblings register to participate,” said Schauer. “This year we have about 270 participants registered and then [there are] additional students who register last minute or choose [to attend events.]”
