Lemek breaks record: Golf teams on the rise

Lemek breaks record; Golf teams on the rise

Sophomore Danielle Lemek set a school record in the third round of the Cincinnati Spring Invitational with a six-under par, 66 round.

The women’s golf team scored a spring-best 303 in the third round, powered by Lemek’s record-breaking performance.

Women’s coach Mary Swanson noted that the team was finally getting comfortable hitting outside after a brutal winter.

“We were due for a good round,” Swanson said.  “I think their mindsets were sharper.”

Lemek said she was disappointed in her second round score of 81 and said that she had shot herself out of the tournament lead.  The third round was a breakthrough in her collegiate career as she broke 70 for the first time.

“It was a pivotal moment for me because I didn’t just break 70, I shattered it,” Lemek said.  “I gained a ton of confidence on the course and in myself.”

Swanson mentioned that Lemek was not feeling well.  Lemek said she didn’t sleep well the night before and that being sick allowed her to relax on the course.

The team will use its best round of the spring as momentum into the final three tournaments.

“We have really come together as a team,” Lemek said.  “With what we have been through this semester, all the ups and downs have brought us together.”

The Braves placed 11 out of the 14 teams with a 79-over par, 943 score.  They finished 56 strokes behind first place Jacksonville University.

Junior Seth Trolia continued his hot play with rounds of 73 and 75 to continue his streak of rounds in the 70’s to 26, but the men’s golf team fell to Jacksonville University 600-612.

Bradley had its best round of the spring shooting a 299 in the first round. Sophomore Alex Shane shot his lowest round of the spring with a 71 and junior Danny Masrin shot his best round of the spring with a 77.

“We had been progressing that way,” men’s Coach Jeff Roche said.  “Getting under 300 is key for us.  We pulled a lot from the first round.”

Next week, the Braves will travel to Macomb for their next tournament.  Trolia mentioned that the course would only be new to the freshmen.  Trolia said he is confident in the team’s experience because the Braves “usually have a good showing there.”
