What was originally planned as a visit to a friend turned into a bucket list check off for one Bradley student.
Senior marketing major Rose Wurster made an appearance on “The Price Is Right” that will premiere at 10 a.m. March 11 on CBS.
“I was pretty committed,” Wurster said. “My goal before graduation was to be on a game show, so I was like ‘whatever kind, who cares.’”
Wurster visited a friend in Los Angeles for a week over winter break in January, researched how to get onto game shows in the area to fulfill her goal and found that “The Price Is Right” was taping.
“I kind of knew the odds and there’s an audience of 300, and of those 300, 150 are actually serious about it, so you have an eight to 12 percent chance of getting on it,” she said.
The show does not require any tryouts, and participants sign up online to request tickets. They are then interviewed in groups of 15 every couple of minutes during the show to be chosen.
“I knew my odds. I knew they obviously wanted somebody energetic and personable in the interview,” Wurster said.
Wurster ended up at the show by herself because her friend had to go to class at the time of the taping, but she found a small group of people to be with and was chosen from there.
“I was on the very front row of it,” she said. “Then I started thinking, ‘maybe he thought I was energetic and wanted an energetic face in the front’, so I was getting kind of discouraged halfway through the show.”
Audience members have to wait to see a cue card with their name in order to know if they are called due to the noise of the show.
“I saw my name before I heard it,” she said. “I hugged a stranger next to me because I had to be personable.”
Wurster said that the set for the show looks smaller than on TV, but the atmosphere was loud, and the announcer was comical.
“He was cracking jokes at the beginning – it was hilarious,” she said. “Drew Carey is super nice of course. I awkwardly kissed him when I went up there because that’s what you’re supposed to do.”
