Student Body Officer candidates have only a few days left to campaign and get the word out about their ticket. Student Body Officer elections will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 2 and will conclude at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3.
Starting Monday students will be able to vote on MyBU for students to serve in the positions of student body president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.
“I’m both relieved and sad [about leaving Student Senate],” said current Vice-President Devon Schultz. “There are things I wish I would have been able to complete, but it’s nice to pass it on to someone who will hopefully do a better job than I would have.”
At last Sunday’s Student Body Officer candidate debates, there were about 100 students in attendance, the highest turnout of students the debate has had in a few years said current Student Body President Tricia Anklan.
“Students who attended the debates were able to hear from all of the candidates,” said election sub-committee chair Ethan Zentz. “I think that walking out of the debates students had a better understanding of who they will vote for.”
This year there are a total of 20 candidates campaigning, the highest number of Student Body Officer candidates Student Senate has seen since 2001, said Director of Student Activities Michelle Whited.
Six students are campaigning for student body president, and of those six, four are campaigning with a full ticket including candidates for vice president, secretary and treasurer.
“I believe that a runoff will happen for all four positions,” said Whited. “I find it hard to believe that any candidates can get 50 percent or more votes with there being so many candidates.”
In the event of a runoff, elections will take place the following week, April 9-10.
