Apple to Apples to tasty treats

Nov. 14 marked the opening of an all new Apple Store in London, and it’s not just any Apple Store; it is The Real Apple Store. This new store has a more expansive selection of products available than any Apple Store has had before, with a total of 1,000 different products on display at this particular location. Everything from the Red Delicious to the Honeycrisp are featured. Even the elusive Knobby Russet, which many believed had ceased production in the late 1800s, makes an appearance.

Although it may look just like a normal Apple Store, The Real Apple Store does not sell any sort of fancy, technological mumbo-jumbo, nor is it affiliated with Apple Inc. The Real Apple store was erected in honor of the 1,000 year anniversary of London’s Borough Market and to celebrate British Apple Day.

People from all over London flocked to The Real Apple Store. Using an oh-so similar looking logo on its store front, The Real Apple store parodies the ubiquitous brand to a tee. Apples are displayed on little acrylic pedestals, the layout of the store is nearly identical and there are even “apple gurus” that give out free samples and fascinating apple information, while dressed just like an Apple Store employee.

“People didn’t realize that there were so many varieties of British apples available,” Borough Market representative Kate Howell said in a promotional video for The Real Apple Store. “There’s over 2,000 at the national collection. We want to celebrate the diversity of apples and make sure they don’t die out for generations to come.”

On Apple Day, people across London go to fairs and festivals where they eat all sorts of apple dishes.

Although Americans don’t celebrate Apple Day, that should not stop us from giving the humble apple the respect and recognition it deserves. What better time for an apple celebration than on the mother of all American food holidays, Thanksgiving?

Be sure to keep the doctor away this Thanksgiving with these super easy apple based recipes.

Apple-Cranberry Crisp

Cranberries are a Thanksgiving staple so why not combine them with apples to create a truly delectable dessert. This recipe takes about an hour to make, but is still just as easy as the last.

Ingredients
2 pounds of apples (peeled, cored, and sliced) ⅓ cup quick-cooking oats
¾ cup cranberries ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
¼ cup white sugar ½ cup packed light brown sugar
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon ¼ cup butter (cut into pieces)
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg ½ cup chopped pecans

Directions
1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees and butter an eight-inch square baking dish.

2) In a large bowl, mix together apples, cranberries, white sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Place evenly into baking dish

3) In the same bowl, combine oats, flour, and brown sugar. With a fork, mix in butter until crumbly. Stir in pecans. Sprinkle over apples.

4) Bake in oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and apples tender.

There you have it folks, a scrumptious dessert good enough to turn grandma’s head and keep your annoying cousin quiet.

Celebrate Apple Day the Thanksgiving way and be on the lookout for the Granny Smith S6. I hear it’s going to be announced sometime this month.
