Fall Movie Frenzy

While summer is usually regarded as the best time for movies, the upcoming fall line up of films is impressive in its own right. Like the change of autumn leaves, the loud and frenetic sequences of blockbuster action will phase out to allow efforts of eclectic style, storytelling and imagery to take the main stage.

If you’re curious about what movies to check out after you’ve had your daily pumpkin spice latte, here are three to keep in mind:

1. “Tusk” (Sept. 19, dir. Kevin Smith)
Let me start by saying that while small in scale, this most recent film by Silent Bob himself definitely has the most interesting (and weirdest) premise for any movie coming out in the next few months.

Simply put, “Tusk” is about a man held hostage in Canada who believes his captor is trying to turn him into a walrus. Seriously, that’s what it’s about. Not much else is known about the plot, but Smith claims that the movie itself is “stupid”, but it’s also “the best movie he’s ever made”.

2. “Gone Girl” (Oct. 3, dir. David Fincher)
While I haven’t read the book, and probably won’t anytime soon, in order to avoid being one of those people who says “the book is better than the movie,” I will say that this adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s popular novel looks amazing so far.

The director (“Se7en”, “Fight Club”, “The Social Network”) is top-notch. The cast, which includes Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry (yes, that Tyler Perry) is promising. The teaser trailer, released earlier this summer, paints a mysterious, atmospheric picture that looks to take the audience on an emotional, twist-filled ride.

3. “Interstellar” (Nov. 6, dir. Christopher Nolan)
Chris Nolan always knows how to find his way into my wallet. His latest effort has the look and feel of a summer blockbuster: A-list cast, grand technical scale and a score by Hans Zimmer, but it also appears to have a more personal focus, as most of the footage released is comprised of the characters monologuing in typical Nolan-esque fashion.

Then again, like the League of Shadows, Nolan movies are generally shrouded in mystery until release, so no one truly knows what the movie is really about. We’ll just have to wait and see.
