Flashback Friday

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: We here at The Voice love to keep up with the latest trends. We also enjoy bringing up old trends and either laughing at how stupid they were or shedding a nostalgic tear or two for the days of old. That’s why we’ve decided to dedicate a weekly section entirely to participating in the long-standing pasttime of reminiscing.

Surge
Growing up, I never knew much about Surge other than the fact that it was in a green can and apparently was the drink of choice for adrenaline junkies and hyperactive youths.

Coca-Cola recently brought Surge back from the dead and, being the curious cat that I am, I decided to grab a can and give it a shot. As I sipped the green liquid from its matching can, a series of thoughts flashed within my subconscious in a furious flurry:

1. This tastes like fruity battery acid.
2. I think my teeth are melting.
3. Ugh. That sip burned more than the last.
4. People actually drank this stuff? People still do?
5. Maybe this isn’t so bad. It’s kind of like Mountain Dew on meth. And cocaine.
6. Why is everything around me moving so fast?
7. My heart hurts.
8. I feel really good.
9. I’m blinking a lot.
10. I want to run a marathon.

In the end, my curiosity left me with a sugar rush and potentially damaged kidneys, but it was beyond worth it.

Wonder Ball
Every time I went to the Jewel-Osco with my Dad I got a Wonder Ball. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the phenomenal Wonder Ball, it was a spherical, thin shell of milk chocolate with a surprise inside.

In April 2000, the Wonder Ball replaced the usual toy inside with candy due to choking hazards. Come on, Nestlé, how did children eating their way to a toy ever remotely sound like a good idea?
To be completely honest, I don’t remember them tasting too great, but the novelty of not knowing what was inside was enough to make it my favorite treat up until they were discontinued in 2004.
