Music Marketing: Daggering Your Way to the Top

Watch, attend, or simply listen to a Chicago Blackhawks game and you’ll indubitably hear a mass of people chanting “da da da, da da da, da da da da da da da.”

With Bradley University being as close to Chicago as it is, I have no doubt that you probably know exactly what I’m talking about and maybe even sang that to yourself just now.

When the Blackhawks score a goal, they’re not the only ones scoring. Those iconic “da’s” are the chorus to the song “Chelsea Dagger” by The Fratellis, or, as it might be better known, the goal song for the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Fratellis may only end up being a one-hit wonder, but they sure will make a lot of money doing it.
That’s the power of just one song catchy enough to captivate some big cheese trying to create or bolster a brand image. For bands trying to make it in the music industry, this is the kind of opportunity that can fuel a career.

While The Fratellis’ popularity as a touring and recording band has fallen under the radar, other artists have used these marketing opportunities to propel their career.

I’ve discussed The Black Keys before, as perhaps they are now (or have recently been) at the paramount of their fame, but they worked their way up in the world of popular music by selling the usage of their music to car and jewelry commercials along the way.

Even if people didn’t know it, they probably became more and more attuned to The Black Keys because of their advertisement placement.

With album sales of any sort being a debt-mongering endeavor for most musicians (excluding only the currently most popular), getting recognized as much and in any way might be the way of the future for musicians struggling to make money.

Even the biggest musicians, like Beyoncé and Jay Z, have resorted to drastic measures (e.g. marrying each other) to get the album sales.

I’m not actually saying that Beyoncé and Jay Z married each other to make more money; I’m more so saying that having your name, image, sound, or whatever attached to some other prominent idea will find you own brand a plethora of new opportunities and/or money.

…And the Fratellis hit the jackpot! Da da da, da da da, da da da da da da da.!
