This week in … Holidays

April 14 may not be a nationally recognized holiday in the U.S., but every day is a celebration of funny, weird and wonderful events somewhere. Check out some of these cool unofficial holidays that occur this week, according to the Internet.

Dolphin Day

This is perhaps one of the most recognizable unofficial holidays of the world. Having gained popularity in the 1900s and continuing to today, Dolphin Day focuses on the worldwide plight of dolphins. San Francisco, New York City and Tokyo have gatherings and awareness meetings to show not only their appreciation, but also their hope that in the near future, dolphin hunting will be banned.

That Sucks! Day

Although easier said than done, sometimes you just have to accept that the world sucks. You wake up late for class, spill boiling coffee on your new blouse, forget your assignment in your room and fail your test. In short, That Sucks! Day brings awareness to those times, and that they will happen whether you like it or not.

Look Up at the Sky Day

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what is happening around us that we forget the simplest things in life. Greed and consumer culture have led so many of us to believe the only things that are worth anything are material objects. We get so absorbed in our day-to-day lives and stress out about the future that we tend to put aside what we are blessed with. During this Look Up at the Sky Day, take a second and reflect on your life to make sure you are living it to the greatest capacity.
