Golf teams prepare for fall season finales

The Bradley men’s golf team turned in a final round score of 290, propelling them to a second place finish at the Zach Johnson Invitational last Tuesday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Braves were, once again, led by the strong play of freshman Drake Bushong, who finished one-under 70 and placed first overall in the tournament. Senior Garrett Cox finished third, followed by fellow senior Lyle Burns, who finished one-over par 70 to finish sixth for Bradley.

The Bradley men’s golf team will spend this week preparing to wrap up its fall season this Monday and Tuesday at the Austin Peay Invitational in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

The women will also round out their season in Kentucky this Monday and Tuesday at the Cardinal Cup, hosted by the University of Louisville. The women’s team will face some of the strongest competition it has played all year, with top teams such as Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Illinois in the field.

Head coach Mary Swanson is confident in how her team will face the tough competition.

“Our girls are capable of playing at a high level,” Swanson said. “We need to play under control and focus on ourselves, and the results will take care of themselves. I know they belong here.”

The women’s team is fairly young but has leaned on the leadership of its three strong seniors, Danielle Lemek, Jenna Roadley and Allison Walsh, throughout this season.

“Our three seniors have three different approaches to the game,” Swanson said. “All three have their own unique playing style and demonstrate different ways to succeed. They are great examples for our younger players in terms of their work ethic and dedication.”

Both teams look forward to ending the fall season on a high note and working toward improving for the spring.
