Soccer team adds assistant coach to staff

Former Richmond Head Coach Jeff Gettler has been named as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer team.
It shouldn’t take much time for coach Jim DeRose and Gettler to become accustomed to each other. DeRose served as the top assistant on Gettler’s Richmond staff in 1995, his first year as the Richmond coach.
Gettler fills a hole that has been open since July when Brad Ruzzo left for a head coaching job at Mercer.
Gettler does not come to the Hilltop short on experience.
In his 26 years of coaching he has racked up a 231-224-67 record between jobs at Massachusetts, Lafayette and Richmond. With a 123-115-40 record while at Richmond he became winningest coach in school history both by number of wins and winning percentage. He has also been named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and led his teams to two NCAA Tournaments.
His success seems to rub off on others as well.
Seventeen of his former assistants and three of his former players currently hold head coaching jobs at the collegiate level.
Gettler will join DeRose and Preston Good on a staff that will lose just one player to graduation later this year.
