Broadside celebrated student writers of all genres during its spring open mic Tuesday in Lydia’s Lounge.
The event highlighted students published in Broadside’s spring journal, which consisted of music, poetry and prose.
Editor-in-Chief Maggie Cipriano said the journal is a literary arts collection that publishes student’s creative pieces.
“We take submissions from all Bradley students regardless of major, and through an anonymous evaluation process, [we] select the pieces that will go into the journal and ultimately be published,” Cipriano, a senior English major, said.
Junior theatre arts major Hannah Williams showcased a plethora of different talents including singing, playing the ukulele and reciting her poem titled, “To the Asshole Who Insulted My Poetry at a Party Last Thursday,” which highlighted the importance of self-expression.
“I’m all about freedom of expression, and I don’t think it’s cool when people try to restrict your shit because they see some sort of vision for you,” Williams said.
Cody Mützefeldt, a sophomore English and religious studies double major, said his prose “Travel Advice to New Babylon” was inspired by the struggles he experienced during his early childhood.
“I really liked writing that piece because it allowed me to experiment a lot more with form, specifically experimenting with second person future tense, which was a bit difficult to work with,” Mützefeldt said.
The latest edition of “Broadside Writers & Artists” Spring 2015 Literary Arts Journal is available to students at various locations across campus.
