Music Festival Fashion

The sun’s just starting to show, so you know I’ve got one thing on my mind: the summer music schedule. Over the next few months, hipsters, trendsetters and music-lovers alike will be flocking to various music festivals all over the country.

While I’m looking forward to the music, the number one thing on my mind right now is fashion. Or more accurately, what I am going to wear. If you’re going to a music festival, or even an outdoor concert, I’ve got the fashion guide to suit your concert experience.

  1. The Happy Camper
If you’re forgoing a hotel room for a shared tent with friends, you’re going to want to pack versatile clothes that are either destruction- proof or cheap enough that you won’t feel too bad about ruining them. There are selections of rain boots these days that come in a heat-manageable ankle length. A lightweight scarf will also save your life during a long trip. When it’s hot, tie it around your head as a sweatband. When it’s cool, drape it around your shoulders.
  2. The Front-Row Fanatic
If you’re moshing in the front row or just trying to hold your ground, it’s important to wear a shoe that protects your toes and gives you lots of balance. Try boots that have a small, stable platform that won’t have you tripping but will give you a slight vertical boost — and you know that every inch counts (especially if you’re short like me). And unless your goal is to flash everyone from here to 50 feet downstage while crowd-surfing, wear a pair of shorts that go down to your fingertips.
  3. The Lounger
If you’re the sitting type (no shame in that) a maxi-dress will let you spread out comfortably, even if you don’t have a blanket. Also, don’t forget your hat. Since there’s no fear of getting jostled around and losing it, feel free to bring something stunning like a fedora or big floppy hat.
  4. The Street-Style Chic
This year’s patterned running shoes are last year’s sneaker wedge, and as someone who despises all things athletic, there are actually cute pairs out there that you can wear from the gym to a concert. This is also your chance to pile on the accessories: sunglasses, ear- cuffs, arm party of bracelets; yes please.
