Six Things to Be Thankful For in 2014

Six Things to Be Thankful For in 2014

1. You probably don’t have Ebola
Let’s be honest, the likelihood of you having Ebola is incredibly slim. But with all the news coverage of the outbreaks and the quarantines happening in response to Americans going to parts of Africa, it’s easy to see how one could be a little freaked out about getting the virus. The chances of you, the person reading this right now, getting Ebola are far less than the likelihood of getting attacked by a shark in your lifetime. So high five; you should be thankful.

2. The rise and fall of Flappy Bird
Flappy Bird could arguably have been both the best and worst thing that happened this year. If you’ve played the game, you know the anger it can cause. The game was removed from the App Store and Google Play, which may bring a single tear to the eyes of some. Either way, we should give thanks that it’s no longer ruining our lives.

3. “Orange is the New Black” Season 2
OITNB sparked our curiosities about what it’s like to be a woman in prison during season one. It was a good jump off point for the show’s concept, but season two gave us more insight into the lives of the inmates, and best of all, Piper was not the focus this time around. It also gave us a new outlet for our rage through the character Vee, leaving viewers wanting more for the anticipated season three—which is yet another reason to be thankful.

4. Benedict Cumberbatch
If you’re not sure who Benedict Cumberbatch is, you’ve probably seen him somewhere on the Internet and thought to yourself “this guy kind of looks like a foot.” In regards to that, you aren’t wrong. But Cumberbatch has been making his presence in the United States better known throughout the year, which is perfect since he’s got the voice of a British angel whispering sweet nothings in your ear. Also, the guy seems pretty down-to-earth, which is always a plus with celebs.

5. Taco Bell’s breakfast menu
The best worst fast food got better (worse?) with its breakfast menu. Taco Bell unveiled classics like the A.M. Crunchwrap and Waffle Taco. Giving thanks for this comes in different forms: you might be thankful that you now have a new place to get your breakfast fix, or you could be thankful that you have access to a stove or microwave and never have to subject yourself to anything that Taco Bell calls breakfast. In reality, everyone wins with this one.

6. Surviving the midwest Ice Age
The beginning of the year proved that Midwesterners truly are tough and adaptable to anything Mother Nature throws at them. Temperatures dropped down to the negatives (remember that -30 degree windchill?) and we were blessed with wind that felt like tiny knives to the face. This year, we should all be proud and thankful that we survived to see another winter like that ahead of us.
