The U.S. Department of Education held the first inaugural International Education Week in 2000.
A quarter-century later, Bradley is celebrating international education for a month during a time when it needs more recognition than ever.
From Nov. 5 through Nov. 21, Bradley is hosting events celebrating international education, including film screenings and flag parades. While the celebration has historically lasted a week, Bradley will finish the festivities with 10 events across 16 days.
Jeanie Bukowski, Faculty Director of the Office of Global Studies and Initiatives, referenced the need to acknowledge the diversity of international students on campus.
“We have international students here from 35 different countries,” Bukowski said on BUTV News. “The idea is to celebrate them and also to educate these younger kids about countries all over the world.”
Those younger students included some from local elementary schools, who travelled to the hilltop for an educational celebration in the Student Center Ballroom. Bradley is helping to teach the next generation of students, not limiting themselves to those on campus.
This celebration is coming at the perfect time.
There’s a growing nationalist sentiment within the country, and xenophobia is on the rise. Given the current administration’s crackdown on campus protests and their attempt to coerce colleges into following their educational policy, international students need all the protection and recognition they can get.
This celebration from Bradley is absolutely a step in the right direction.
