Bradley brings SNL to campus

The scene is set and the camera is rolling as a new club, Bradley University Laughter Live (BULL Productions) made its debut on March 20. BULL Productions plans to work on a series of student-produced skits and make a feature show to present at the end of the semester.

The club was created by freshman television arts major Ryan Knott, who was inspired by NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

“I was watching Will Ferrel on SNL in January and got to thinking about how realistic a production like SNL would be at Bradley University,” Knott said. “I wrote up a proposal for the club that night and ran with it.”

The club is completely student-run and requires actors, writers, producers and marketers to put on a 45-minute live show in May.

“All students are welcome: young or old, male or female, theatre student or [engineering] student. Anyone who is admitted to this college should get involved,” Knott said.

Freshman public relations major Sophia Vojta said she heard about the club through Facebook and has already submitted several scripts with friends.

“I hope to end up in the advertising [and] promotional business, and I think anything that has to do with creating and writing will be good on my resume,” said Vojta.  “It’s also a chance to share all the jokes my friends and I make that we think are funny, and it’s a fun activity to help fight off the Peoria boredom.”

Though groups like BBQ Kitten bring comedy to campus, Vojta said she believes the SNL club will provide unique opportunities to even more students.

“I really enjoy BBQ Kitten performances, but I’m not capable of improvising so well like them,” Vojta said. “It was really exciting to get an opportunity to do the same short comedy skit type thing, but prepared.”

Knott said he was amazed by how well the club has been received so far, and hopes to see it grow in his next three years on campus.

“Next semester, we will be having two shows with recording equipment. In the upcoming years, we might have the possibility of having the shows broadcast live,” Knott said. “I just hope my idea establishes its roots.”
