Bradley’s chapter of women-run, online magazine provides outlet for many

Her Campus strives to give women and other interested students a safe space to express themselves through writing. The organization has chapters at colleges across the country that help publish a magazine written by college women for college women. In just its second year of existence, Bradley’s chapter is already making a difference.

“I joined because I loved writing but felt like I didn’t have a creative outlet in the classes I was taking at Bradley,” Morgan Casey, senior marketing major and executive member of Her Campus, said. “One aspect about [Her Campus] that I enjoy is that we’re able to post articles without our names attached, if we choose, so the environment is about as open as it gets – no judgment.”

Rebecca Rose, a senior nutrition and dietetics major as well as the marketing and publicity director for Her Campus, added that she joined the organization because of her sister’s positive experience with the chapter at Illinois State University.

The online magazine publishes articles that cover current events in society and on campus, pop culture, reviews, and other miscellaneous topics. Her Campus strives to create a safe outlet for every member to write about topics that are important and of interest to them.

“I’ve always loved writing, especially as a writing major,” Kylie Kruis, sophomore psychology and English creative writing double major and president of Her Campus, said. “I also just loved the fact that there was somewhere that was on campus and a safe space for me to put out whatever I wanted while being surrounded by other women.”

Her Campus holds weekly meetings on Tuesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in room 202 of the Global Communications Center. At these meetings, Kruis discusses what accomplishments were achieved in the last week, along with going over story concepts. All ideas are used and everyone is included in the group conversation.

“I try to offer advice in most of the articles I write. I’m a first-generation student so I’ve written a few that are career related to hopefully help others,” Casey said. “I have other articles that focus on self development and some that have no purpose at all, other than being fun to write.”

Along with writing an online magazine, Her Campus also holds fundraisers and events. They plan to host a cornhole tournament fundraiser, as well as a trivia and poetry night. Just two weeks ago, Her Campus raised money by selling goodie bags in the Michel Student Center.

Her Campus boasts chapters at 360 different campuses in 11 different countries around the world. Bradley’s Her Campus recently joined a chapter pod that includes Kent State, University of Buffalo, Carleton University and the University of Kansas. Within the pod, the chapters will collaborate and help each other socially and communicate ideas with one another.

“If you haven’t checked us out yet, check us out. We put up five articles a week, so we are cranking them out all the time and it’s very fun and different,” Kruis said.
