The Department of Communication hosted its first Com Night last night, a celebration of the department’s past, present and future.
Bradley alumnus Jeff Bogart, founder of Bogart, Hurst & Ference law firm, opened the event and introduced his friend and the event’s keynote speaker, Joey Reiman.
Reiman, who was given the nickname the “Moses of marketing,” is the chairman of Brand New World Studios which works to find purpose among Fortune 500 companies.
Borgart became a good friend of Reiman’s after representing him in a lawsuit.
“As you’ll find out shortly, Joey ain’t a regular guy,” Bogart said when introducing Reiman. “Geniuses are just different.”
In Reiman’s speech to students and faculty, he explained how to find purpose in life that will to lead to a more fullfilling career.
“In order to find your purpose, you need three things,” Reiman said. “You need to know what you love, know what you’re good at, how you’re going to help someone with it. If you don’t define yourself, you will be defined by others.”
Reiman said he used this formula to launch the “Like a Girl” Superbowl campaign with the brand Always, owned by Procter & Gamble Co. This led to increased exposure of the brand and instilled confidence in teenage girls going through puberty.
“This is a lecture about moving away from the commerciality of business and to the humanity of business,” Reiman said.
In his book “The Story of Purpose: The Path to Creating a Brighter Brand, a Greater Company and a Lasting Legacy,” Reiman outlines words should be “humanized.” For example, use “love” instead of “loyalty” and “missionaries” instead of “employees.”
“I really enjoyed the talk,” said John Collin, junior marketing and sports communication double major. “It was pretty inspiring to recognize that there’s a purpose out there for everyone.”
