Alles ist Willkommen!
German culture club is one of the international culture clubs on campus. The students in the club do a variety of activities that can be related to German culture.
“We do crafts, watch movies and play games during our weekly meetings, so it is not very formal,” said Kayleigh Spain, the president of German Culture Club and a sophomore statistics major. “There are snacks provided usually and we aren’t a large group, so everyone is included.”
The adviser for the club is visiting assistant professor of German, Agnes Cser. She said that the club is important for students to work together and enjoy the language.
“Students have the opportunity to plan their activities,” Cser said. “They are self-governed. They come together because they enjoy the German language and culture and they build community through this love.”
Spain said she enjoys being around people who share a similar interest.
“When I first came to Bradley, my friend was the president of the German Culture Club, so she invited me to join it,” Spain said. “I had a German minor, so it was a lot of fun being around people who knew or wanted to learn the same language I liked.”
The vice president of the club is freshman Julianna Babin, who is in the academic exploration program.
“It’s great to learn more about the language and practice it somewhere other than the classroom,” Babin said.
Babin said the game night had a good turnout with about 10 people in attendance.
Students do not necessarily need to speak German to attend the club meetings. Babin said students can bring their friends if they are interested in the German language and culture.
“We will definitely be speaking English throughout the meeting,” Babin said. “Although you are encouraged to try speaking German if you can, we want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome at the meetings.”
Every month the World Language Department holds a World Film Series. On April 16, it is the German club’s turn with a showing of “Operation Valkyrie” at 7 p.m. in Bradley Hall 145.
The German culture club meets once a month on Thursdays at Bradley Hall 310.
