Fresh Slice’s baked goods fundraiser flourishes

‘Tis the season for the regular to become spooky, and even fundraisers have gotten into the Halloween spirit with themed baked goods, events and the terrifying concept of finance.

Fresh Slice, Bradley’s hospitality and food organization, sold homemade pumpkin-shaped Rice Krispies Treats and chocolate-covered Oreos in the Michel Student Center on Monday.

Miracle McClendon, president of Fresh Slice, said she hopes the latest fundraising effort can cover costs for the rapidly increasing number of people attending Fresh Slice events.

The group’s first event of the semester was making pizza from scratch, which meant buying the ingredients themselves; however, the organization quickly encountered a problem.

“We literally ran out of everything in 10 to 20 minutes,” McClendon, a senior nutrition and dietetics major, said.

Despite being around for over 10 years, Monday was Fresh Slice’s first on-campus fundraiser in recent years. The organization previously hosted its fundraisers at the Riverfront Winterfest, which hasn’t occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was a success according to Fresh Slice members, as they sold twice the amount of treats expected at a total of 35. The results have encouraged the executive board to host more fundraisers in the future.

McClendon and Shelby Byrd, Fresh Slice vice president, feel student organizations are more responsible for their finances as of late.

“In recent years, Bradley is a little bit more stingy with their money,” McClendon said. “A lot of [workers] are feeling that.”

Byrd agreed, believing that the pressure is impacting other organizations as well.

“That’s why you probably see a lot of people doing a lot of more fundraising to raise money for their organizations,” Byrd, a senior kinesiology and health science major, said. “They are being more specific on what they are giving money to now.”

For those interested in more food-themed events, Fresh Slice will be hosting pineapple carving at 8 p.m. on Oct. 24 in Bradley 046.
