LAS to host celebration week

Being a liberal arts and sciences (LAS) major is reason enough to celebrate. This was the idea behind the LAS celebration week, which will feature an event for liberal arts and science majors every day from Sept. 10-15.

This is the first year the college is launching the week-long event highlighting its recent changes and initiatives.

“We want to draw attention to the college’s first-year seminar program and the summer undergraduate research and artistry fellowship Program,” said LAS dean Christopher Jones. “Further, it is essential to Bradley’s largest and most intellectually diverse college to take the lead in highlighting how our educational programs, including the Bradley Core Curriculum, contribute to an open and vibrant society.”

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences decided to launch a “celebration week” as a reminder of the centrality of an engaged education in the liberal arts and sciences to the mission of Bradley University.

According to Jones, the goal of the event is to present students with the opportunities offered within the college.

“In a single week, they can see how LAS students develop intellectual depth and breadth by tackling life’s big questions in inviting classes with outstanding professors, engage in faculty-mentored research and artistry, and benefit from connections with successful alumni,” Jones said. “It is also an opportunity for Bradley’s many LAS majors and minors to come together, build community, and take well-deserved pride in their home college.”

While this is a chance for underclassmen to get to know the college, it’s also targeted towards upperclassmen who are looking for future employment opportunities and advice.

“LAS juniors and seniors will find the ‘LAS education: a foundation for successful leadership’ alumni panel and networking event on Sept. 12 especially valuable,” Jones said. “Three highly successful graduates will discuss how their Bradley LAS education provided a basis for future professional and personal success.”

The celebration week will kickoff with a summer research & artistry colloquium on Monday and end with keynote speaker Michael Roth, the president of Wesleyan University in Connecticut and author of “beyond the University: why liberal education matters.”

“[Roth] is a nationally recognized leader in higher education and a well-regarded scholar who has written and spoken passionately and persuasively on how liberal education has cultivated individual freedom, civic virtue, and optimism over the course of American history,” Jones said.
