Student journal broadens content

Broadside: Writers & Artists is a student-run literary and arts journal where students can submit their writing and art. For this upcoming edition, the journal is hoping to showcase more diversity.

“We’re just looking for different perspectives, really,” Becca Meier, senior creative writing major and editor-in-chief, said. “We’re looking for art that gives different feelings than what we’re used to, or writing that makes you think of something differently.”

Students, regardless of their area of study, can submit artwork and writing. The writing section is divided into two: poetry and prose.

“Even if you’re like, ‘This isn’t very serious.’ It doesn’t have to be,” Meier said. “If you’re confident in something, submit it, because chances are someone’s really gonna like it.”

Maddie Wick, a sophomore drawing major and art editor of Broadside said she highly encourages others to submit work.

“We want everyone to feel like they can submit their work regardless of their style,” Wick said.

This year, Broadside will be releasing one journal in April instead of one in both the fall and the spring due to various factors such as budgeting issues.

Students can submit up to three artworks, five poems and three prose pieces.

After submissions are in, staff members go through all the artwork or written pieces in their group and vote before and after a discussion on what to include in the journal.

Besides working on the journal, Broadside is also hosting one competition in the fall and one in the spring. The winner will be featured in the upcoming semester journal.

The competitors will each present a prompt or theme centered around them.

“That way, when they’re on facing pages in the journal, it’ll all be around a similar topic,” Meier said. “I’m really excited to see how they all kind of like go together.”

Wick said that there is something special about seeing your own work in a publication.

“Seeing your art published and people complimenting and congratulating you on your work validates all the hard work and love you put into what you’re creating,” Wick said.

Broadside is an organization with multiple positions. Besides an editor-in-chief, the organization has an art, prose and two poetry editors as well as a social media team, project managers and evaluators.

According to Meier, the social media team is a new addition to help spread awareness about Broadside on campus. They also post prompts to inspire people to submit work
