The Markin Recreation Center hosted a Halloween-themed Late Night BU, featuring various crafts and a costume contest from 9 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 11.

“Late Night BU is alcohol-alternative programming. It is put on six times a year, typically on the night where people are most likely to go out,” Amanda Allgeier, Bradley H.E.A.T. coordinator, said.

H.E.A.T, which stands for Health, Empower and Teach, was one of the student organizations that had stations up during the event.

“We are student educators, so we focus on mental health, sex ed, alcohol awareness and overall wellness,” Allgeier said.

Students decorated tote bags, painted pumpkins and shoveled through a bucket of corn to find buried fidget toys.

Another activity aimed to generate ideas for improving mental health. Students wrote what they could do to improve their lives on Post-it notes, and then put it on a poster of Frankenstein’s monster. In exchange, students took another student’s Post-it note as a self-care reminder.

Other stations offered tarot card readings, an escape room, giveaways and fall-themed foods, such as apple cider donuts.

The most notable event was the costume contest, where Late Night BU’s Instagram followers voted on who had the best attire out of five finalists.

Finalist Mason Chmielarski had a costume with large wings. While most of Chmielarski’s costume was bought in pieces online, they made one metal pin on the costume during a blacksmithing class.

“This is kind of a steampunk pirate-captain-themed costume. Most of the costume I used at the Renaissance Fair,” Chmielarski said.

Students also dressed up as Jessie from the “Toy Story” franchise, Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz,” Loki and a nun.

Julia Hunt, a junior animation and organizational communication double major, won first prize – a JBL speaker and a $50 gift card – as Dorothy.

Other activities in Markin were also open such as rock-climbing.

Late Night BU has again provided an alternative to partying on a Friday night.
