Golfers tee off at ISU

On Sept. 4 and 5, the Bradley women’s golf team competed in the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Illinois, where it finished in sixth place in a 14-team field.

The teams who finished ahead of the women’s golf team were Boston College, who won the team title with a score of 890, Northern Illinois, Florida Gulf Coast, Butler and tournament-host Illinois State, who finished two shots below the Braves scoring a 911.

Sophomore Chloe Horton led the way for the Braves with a score of 225. Only one shot behind her was sophomore Francesca Saban, who shot a 226.

To round out the scoring, junior Ally Scaccia and freshman Taylor Ledwein followed the sophomores up with scores of 229 and 233 respectively. Overall, the Braves scored a 913 for the tournament. Head coach Mary Swanson said she was very satisfied with how the team played in its first tournament this season.

“Our depth this year is very exciting and was on display, as our starting five all really made strong contributions during this past weekend,” Swanson said. “They all work hard and understand the areas of the game they need to focus on individually and as a whole team.”

After a great first showing, the women’s golf team hopes to perform well once again as it returns to action Saturday, Sept. 17, at the UIC Fall Invite in Chicago.

The Bradley men’s golf team competed just after the women on Sept. 6 and 7 at the Crusader Collegiate in Chesterton, Indiana, where they finished first in a four-team field, beating out Valparaiso, Wright State and Detroit.

This experienced Braves team came to play with junior Ethan Brue leading the way as he shot a 214. Senior Bobby Jacobs had a great showing playing near his hometown, shooting a 215. Closely following behind Jacobs, were junior Zach Jewell and sophomore Drake Bushong, shooting 217 and 218 respectively. Overall, the Braves scored an 864, the second lowest score in program history and two shots off the program mark of 862, which was set in the fall of 2015.

The Bradley men’s golf team will hope to continue their early success in two weeks on Sept. 19 and 20 at the John Dallio Memorial in Lemont.
