Alternative Cinema For Valentine’s Day Viewing

Let’s be honest, there’s only so many times a couple can watch John Cusack blast Peter Gabriel out of his boom-box in “Say Anything,” or cry together when Rose lets go of Jack at the end of “Titanic” (I swear, it only happened to me once).

If you’re looking for something different to watch while cuddling up on the couch, try taking a chance on these four unconventional love stories.

“Con Air” (1997) – Sure, it’s a movie about a bunch of hardened criminals hijacking their transport plane, but behind all of the blood and explosions, it’s actually a beautiful love story. Nic Cage spends the entire movie fighting and killing his adversaries just so he can make it home to be with his beloved wife and daughter. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is.

“True Romance” (1993) – Quentin Tarantino writing a romance movie? Sounds crazy, I know, but it actually happened, and it’s just as crazy as it sounds. It’s the classic story of boy meets call girl, boy and call girl get married, boy tracks down and kills her pimp, boy and call girl run off with pimp’s supply of cocaine, and a lot of violence and passionate sex follows. Oh, and Brad Pitt cameos as a stoner. That alone is worth the price of admission.

“I Love You, Man” (2009) – With all of the romantic comedies that have been made over the years, the advent of the first truly “bromantic” comedy was a refreshing change of pace. A bromance is a beautiful thing, and it’s about time that Hollywood has finally started to recognize that love between bros can be just as strong as it is between anyone else.

“The Fly” (1986) – I’ve written before on the high amount of nightmare fuel Jeff Goldblum’s transformation spews at the audience during each viewing of this classic, but I didn’t really touch upon the romance that blossomed between Goldblum’s Seth and Geena Davis’ Veronica. The whole first half of the movie is comprised of them going on dates and sharing some sweet scientific pillow talk, but things slowly start to go awry as he turns into a giant man-fly. No worries, they still loved each other very much in the end. Things just didn’t work out for, well, obvious reasons.
