BU Fashion Focus spotlights trendsetters

Spring has finally sprung on the Hilltop, and fashionistas are blooming with new warm-weather trends everywhere.

Luckily, students have BU Fashion Focus to cover all things fashion with the April BU Trendsetter Competition.

BU Fashion Focus began the monthly trendsetter competitions in March. Seniors Caitlyn Mayhorn and Charisse Barnachea, the BU Fashion Focus president and event planner, respectively, said they created the competition as a way to share fashion trends on campus.

“We thought the competition would be a fun way to engage well-dressed Bradley students and let them know that there is an outlet for them via Fashion Focus,” retail merchandising major Mayhorn said.

The competition consists of Fashion Focus executives scouting the campus for fashion-forward students. Then, members post photos of the best fashion trendsetters onto the Fashion Focus Facebook page.

Students are invited to vote for their favorite trendsetter by “liking” the photo on Facebook throughout the course of the month.

Public relations major Barnachea said she wanted to do something new on campus.

“I have always wanted to photograph stylish people on campus but never had the chance or resources to,” Barnachea said. “Through this contest, I wanted to send the message that it’s okay to dress up, and that we have style diversity on campus.”

Barnachea said with Mayhorn’s assistance and a trusty DSLR (digital) camera, BU Trendsetters was born.

Freshman AEP major Elaina Rhoades was chosen as one of the candidates for the April edition of the Trendsetter Competition. Rhoades said being chosen as a fashion trendsetter was exciting.

“I think the competition is great,” she said. “It’s great to see the style from other students as well as spotlighting some people who really love fashion.”
