Deal or no Deal? Secretary steps down

The incoming student body officers were installed by University President Joanne Glasser on Monday, with one notable exception.

Sophomore psychology major and Secretary of the Assembly elect Brian Deal resigned from his position one week after elections.

“It was not only in my best interest, but also the university’s, for me to step down,” Deal said. “It was a difficult decision, but I believe [it was] the right one.”

Deal, who currently works as a student aide coordinator, assistant resident advisor and student admissions representative, said he felt stress immediately after receiving the position. He initially thought he would be able to handle the added responsibility, but unfortunately, he said, he was wrong.

“The new position caused me to be extremely stressed, overwhelmed and unhappy,” he said.

Deal informed Student Body President Zack Shaw of his resignation Monday morning.

Deal said he does not plan on being involved with Student Senate during the upcoming year but he is willing to help where he’s needed, just not in the capacity of secretary of the assembly.

“That position deserves [to be filled by] somebody who is able to put a lot of time and work into it,” Deal said. “And that was something I was unable to do.”

Petitions for the now available Secretary of Assembly position are available through the Student Activities Office or online at the Student Activities Office webpage. The deadline for the application and a petition with 150 signatures is 5 p.m. Monday, April 22. Applicants are required to attend the Student Senate general assembly meeting to submit the application at the Garrett Multicultural Center.

The slate for next year’s vice presidents of the colleges will also be presented at Monday’s meeting.
