Delts host first philanthropy week

Delta Tau Delta hosted its first full week of philanthropic activities beginning Sept. 29.

The organization raised money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDFR) efforts to find a cure for type 1 diabetes.

Delta Tau Delta Philanthropy Chair Ryan Gutchewsky said the week serves to create awareness and promote participation for the JDFR cause on campus.

“This week will showcase how important philanthropy is and how huge it plays a part in fraternity life,” Gutchewsky said.

Monday’s blood drive kicked off the week by partnering with the Red Cross Club to sponsor the event.

The philanthropy week included various on and off campus events, such as Pie a Delt, Deltober Fest and the Peoria JDRF 5K Walk on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Delta Tau Delta invited students to the quad to pie a fraternity member in the face with whipped cream for $1. Wednesday, students bought a dinner with their favorite Delt at the Delt Date Auction in Marty Theater.

Thursday, Delta Tau Delta sold paper sneakers for $1 to build excitement for their 5K walk on Sunday. Friday, students enjoyed frozen yogurt, jousting and beanbag tossing on the Olin Quad for $3 during Deltober Fest.

Saturday, the Delts will play flag football with the sororities to raise awareness for the cause. Ending the week, the Delts will volunteer in Peoria’s JDRF 5K Walk for type 1 diabetes.

“I think it’s very noble what they’re doing,” senior Cedric Knuth said. “Getting people to donate blood is such an easy yet essential thing, and that they are out there promoting it is really cool.”
