Fraternities welcome new members at Block Party

Throughout the weekend, male students searched for a fraternity house to call home. Bradley’s greek community celebrated the induction of its newest fraternity invitees at the First Annual Interfraternity Council Block Party.

Anadexis, the ceremony in which new fraternity members receive their bids, inspired the IFC Block Party. The event was full of music, free food and games.

The IFC Block Party served as the greek community’s way to welcome its newest members, and they wanted all greeks to be a part of it.

“We wanted to give all of greek life an opportunity to meet one another since the new members of each sorority joined a week earlier,” senior and IFC Vice President Mitch Kuldell said. “We wanted to show everyone, especially the new members, how big and inclusive our greek community truly is.”

Walking down Fredonia Avenue, students could get fried chicken from Alpha Epsilon Pi or s’mores at Sigma Delta Tau.

“I loved all the food and games,” Gamma Phi Beta social chair Laura Picardi said. “It was really cool to watch the Bradley’s Fittest Greek competition.”

In the new competition, greek-affiliated members were challenged to Bradley’s own survival of the fittest.

“It is amazing to me how many athletically talented students we have,” said Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Nancy Schwartz. “I also enjoyed seeing chapters cheer on their members; [it was] brotherhood and sisterhood in action.”

The events on Fredonia may not stop there. Reports from IFC and Panhellenic Council members say greek leaders are trying to make the event an ongoing tradition.

“I believe it’s a great opportunity to develop greek unity from the first day members join,” Kuldell said. “You aren’t joining one chapter; you are joining a whole greek community, and I believe that is exactly what this block party illustrates.”
