New campus lacrosse club hits the mark

Look out Bradley, there’s a new team in town.

This semester, the campus welcomed a new lacrosse club.

Senior and Captain Adam Grossman said initially he was disappointed that Bradley didn’t have a lacrosse team.
“I have been thinking about setting one up since freshman year,” he said.

Grossman said he and his teammates have been playing with the idea since Jan. 2012. Assistant Director of Campus Recreation Nick Kramer recently approved the proposal, and the plan was set into action.

The club team is a part of The Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference. The team will travel and is planning to stay within the Illinois and Missouri area.

Currently, the team has 13 players and two captains, Grossman and sophomore Jake Cavanaugh.

Lacrosse only needs 13 players to host a game, but Grossman said there are 15, and the number is growing.

“People can still join, we are always looking for membership,” Grossman said. “You do not have to have experience with the sport. We let anyone play. We have two guys on the team who have never played before.”

The team currently practices at Meinen Field, but it may have to move to the Peoria Park District because of spacial issues.

The lacrosse season lasts through the fall. The team hopes to compete in six to eight games in the Illinois area. They will play home games, but are still unsure if all games will be on Bradley’s campus. However, they won’t be too far away.

“We hope we can get free transportation offered to the students to see the game,” Grossman said.

To kick off the season, the team has a home game Saturday at Meinen Field versus Eastern Illinois.

The first game is on campus, so student attendance is encouraged.

“We have to see what Saturday brings,” Grossman said. “We’re hoping for the best.”
