Local chefs prepare meals with students

Fresh Slice is on a mission to get students excited about preparing appetizing and inexpensive meals.

The campus hospitality leadership organization launched its Guest Chef Series Tuesday, Sept. 23. The four-part series brings local chefs to campus to provide a cooking demonstration for easy-made dishes.

Fresh Slice President Carolyn Stewart and Vice President Kelly Beal said they are excited about the organization’s addition of the Guest Chef Series, a program of events that is $5 for nonmembers.

“Fresh Slice started a Guest Chef Series in order to spread the word about our club,” Stewart said. “Everyone is welcome to attend the events, whether or not they are members of the club, for a small fee.”

The first part of the series featured Chef Trent of Maxine’s on Main, an upscale restaurant in Morton. Chef Trent led participants in a demonstration for a pesto chicken dish with quinoa.
The second part will feature Chef Lisa of Biaggi’s on Monday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. All demonstrations will be held in Bradley Hall, room 65.

“In honor of National Noodle Day, Chef Lisa will show us a unique way of working with ramen noodles in an oriental chicken salad,” Stewart said.

The third part will feature Chef Tyler of McMahon’s Pints and Plates from Washington, Illinois. His event will be held Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. and will include food demonstrations on preparing dishes with items from Dollar Tree. The final part of the series will feature Chef Ian of The Chef and the Baker, a new catering company in Peoria. The date and menu are soon to be announced.

Although Fresh Slice is a hospitality leadership organization, Stewart said the group is not just for those who enjoy cooking. Students of all majors are encouraged to join.

“Fresh Slice is a fun club for all students,” she said. “There are some really great opportunities for students to get involved and to lead without adding a huge time commitment. It is also a great way for Hospitality students to get to know each other and network around Peoria while learning more about the industry.”

Stewart said that spots for Guest Chef events are limited. Students interested in attending may email bufreshslice@gmail.com. Students may also like the BU Fresh Slice Facebook page to stay updated on meetings and events.
