SLAK competition invites dance talent

At the 3rd annual Stroll Like a Kappa (SLAK) event Saturday, three all-female dance teams were in it to win it.

This event is an annual dance competition hosted by Bradley’s chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. SLAK also hosts popular musical artists, with this year’s features including FootworKINGZ from MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” and senior theater major Josiah Williams.

“Strolling” is a form of dancing where people perform synchronized dances in a uniformed line, said President of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc Kyle Williams.
SLAK, which the fraternity hosts each spring, finds women across campus to enter the competition in teams, where they imitate moves performed by the Kappas.

“They work with different members of my organization for over a month in order to prepare for this show,” Williams said. “With the coaches, we help teach the young ladies different dance moves and help them perfect them so they can look just as smooth as us doing them.”

But more than a dancing competition, Williams said he believes SLAK provides a campus-wide bonding experience that brings entertainment to the students.

“I know being a part of greek life, people think that we live in a different world,” Williams said. “Through this competition, we like to show our classmates that we are all the same.”

While he was glad the event became a huge success, Williams said he felt anxious at first.

“There was so much anticipation going on before the event that I was eager for it to start and be finished,” Williams said.

He said he had much gratitude for the support he received from the Kappa sweethearts and other volunteers, as well as former Kappas who traveled to Peoria for the event.

“I am very thankful for all of their hard work,” Kyle Williams said. “The FootworKINGZ did amazing. The crowd was so intrigued by their intricate dance moves. Josiah did a fantastic job, as well. He represented Bradley well, and you can really tell that this is his passion.”

Williams said that the Kappas are in the process of adding new members and that they will host their annual Krimson and Kreme Ball again next year, as well as another open mic night.

“New additions to next year’s show will be a bigger stage and more performances by the performers and the artists,” Williams said.
