Student Senate: A semester preview

Senators start up the Rise of the Red with student senate events this year.

New student senators were announced Wednesday evening, with only 34 percent of the seats filled. Additional senators with late petitions will be voted on in the first general assembly meeting. If all seats still aren’t filled after this meeting, students may petition to become a senator.

The new senators will be welcomed into office at the Presidential Leadership Reception Sept. 15 from 5 to 6 p.m. After, there will be an informational meeting on what to do at general assembly meetings from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

The first general assembly meeting will be Sept. 22. All students are welcome.

One big event for students to experience campus life this semester is Culture on the Quad Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Planned by Student Senate, Diversity Affairs, Campus Affairs and cultural organizations, this event will feature a variety of per- formers. Some of the performances include steel drums, henna tattoos,
salsa dancing and step demonstrations.

Another Student Senate event is Senate Speak Up Nov. 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. Students are invited to attend and ask questions of campus administrations.

Student Senate’s campaign to enhance school spirit spread through campus last Friday as students donned red apparel for Rise of the Red.

“We want campus to look like a sea of red and promote wearing Bradley gear,” Vice President of Student Affairs Helen Lagerblade said. “We want students to be proud of the school they go to and for that to be evident when someone walks onto campus.”

Senate started a few hashtags on Facebook and Twitter to promote Rise of the Red, including #RiseoftheRed and #OnFridaysWeWearRed.

At the beginning of the school year, students were encouraged to tweet pictures showing Bradley spirit to win a Bradley University Homecoming T-shirt. Students can still get free tank tops if they stop by the student senate table in different places around campus on Fridays while wearing red.
