Students ‘Pinspired’ by student craft club

The Pinterest Club hosted a Thanksgiving-inspired event Nov. 20 in Lydia’s Lounge called Thanksgiving Treast.

Participants crafted Thanksgiving-themed button frames and treats. The crafts included Pilgrim hats, Nutter Butter treats and mini turkeys, each made of various foods.

“All of our activities were ‘pinspirations,’ is what I like to call it, so they are all inspired by Pinterest,” Pinterest Club president Maddie King said.

Pilgrim hats were constructed with Fudge Shoppe cookies and peanut butter cups. The Nutter Butters were combined with chocolate chips to make acorns and Oreos with Chicklets placed around it were used to make mini turkeys.

King, a sophomore advertising and graphic design double major, created the Pinterest Club in November of 2013.

“I was talking to a bunch of friends, and we thought of how cool it would be to have something like a Pinterest Club,” King said. “It kind of turned into my idea of turning Pinterest into life and going on there and finding ideas and actually applying them and utilizing Pinterest as more than just a social media site.”

“Some other clubs don’t have as many events as us,” King said. “We just want to have a lot of events because we think they are fun, and they have been so successful here, so this is something we want to continue.”

According to King, the Pinterest Club has seen a steady increase in participation at all of their events. The Halloween crafts party hosted Oct. 30 was deemed successful with nearly 50 participants.
With increased advertisement for Thanksgiving Treast, King said she hopes to see even more participants and in turn, an increase of attendance at future events.

The Pinterest Club is also hoping to host a huge event next semester called Summer Fest. If funded, the event will be held on Olin Quad with some activities such as tie-dying T-shirts, decorating koozies and making lemonade shake-ups and mini fruit pizzas.

The next Pinterest Club event will be Monday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in Lydia’s Lounge. The theme for this event will be a holiday crafting workshop.

Participants are encouraged to use Pinterest to make their own ugly sweaters to wear for the ugly sweater contest. There will also be snow globes and fun holiday treats.

If students are interested in joining the Pinterest Club, email bupinterestclub@gmail.com.

“Pinterest Club is just the perfect opportunity for students to get creative and do something fun and positive,” King said.
