Be your own valentine

No matter your relationship status or view on Feb. 14, it is important to love yourself and show it in the best ways possible.
Treat yourself this Valentine’s Day!

Loving yourself evokes confidence and might even make it easier to love others. Practicing self-love is something everyone should do because it will help you live a better life.

Go ahead and get yourself some chocolate, because it is delicious and you deserve it. There is no shame in buying your favorite candy to satisfy your sweet tooth, even if you don’t necessarily have a sweetheart.

Do something spontaneous. This could be something you have always wanted to do or maybe something that takes you out of your comfort zone. It doesn’t have to be something dangerous or extraordinary. It could be simple, but also worthwhile.

If you don’t have the cash to buy something nice for yourself, then there are ways to show some self-love without dipping into your savings.

Relax. You can participate in yoga, take a nap or watch something you’ve been waiting to see on TV. Do whatever your mind and muscles desire.

Listen to your favorite music. Completely jam and let loose. Dance like no one is watching and feel the beat. Or just put on those headphones and let the lyrics really sink in and soothe the soul.

Do something you love and feel no guilt in doing it. If it makes you feel good, then do what makes YOU happy. It shouldn’t matter what anyone else thinks. You know what you need.

Make a Valentine’s Day card for yourself. You can write everything you love about you and remember those things when you are feeling down. This could also be a way to start a gratitude journal where you list everything great in your life.

Be creative. Paint, draw, design, write. Show the right side of your brain a little love.

If it’s nice and sunny out, go and enjoy the fresh air. Your body and mind will thank you for the much-needed break from the same four walls and mountain of work.

Make it a self-love party. Surround yourself with positive energy by being with those who care about you. Invite your friends over for a game or movie night. Just have fun!

Clean your living space. This might take some work, but you will feel better once your home is spotless. Declutter your room, declutter your mind.

Be fancy for the day, but only because you want to. Dress up, style your hair, put on makeup and anything else that will make you happy. Don’t do it to impress anyone else.

You don’t need a significant other to celebrate this holiday of love. Put yourself first for a change.

Also, don’t only show that you care for Cupid’s sake. Love and cherish yourself, as well as those around you, every day of the year.

Look into the mirror and smile. Tell yourself that you are enough. You are worth it. You are beautiful. I accept you, and above all, I love you.

Every year, we publish a Valentine’s Day edition of our Voice section in order to bring the spirit of love to campus. We’re excited to bring you a number of articles (some serious, some satirical) dedicated to sex, relationships, the history of Valentine’s Day and more.

Should you plan to celebrate this day of romance with someone, be sure to stay safe and practice healthy sexual habits – and if you’re planning on cuddling up alone or with friends to watch movies and eat discount chocolates, that works perfectly, too. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to have fun.
