College students are tight on money; it’s a tale as old as time. With the state of the economy, students now, probably more than ever, must prioritize where their minimal earnings are distributed. With little to nothing left over, there are often meager funds for fun purchases.
Thrifting may be the most cost-friendly option and conceptual costumes may work best, as finding a perfect replica of something is unlikely. On a tight budget, there are a few places to buy multiple costumes for each night of Halloweekend.
Goodwill
The best time to shop at Goodwill is on Tuesdays because the 50 percent off Color of the Week sale changes early in the day, so that is when the most amount of clothing is out and on sale. Costume pieces can be difficult to style, but Goodwill offers great prices and a sense of sustainability.
Goodwill also stocks up on costumes donated throughout the year to be sold closer to the holiday, making it possible to find specific costumes such as princesses and fairies. There are two locations near campus: one down University Street and another on Main Street.
Plato’s Closet
Although the prices at Plato’s Closet are higher than Goodwill’s, the target consumers are teens and young adults, which applies more to the average college student. Still, it is a budget-friendly option.
Similarly to Goodwill, a small section of completed costumes that have been donated are near the front doors. TV characters from shows like “Friends” or “That ’70s Show” would be easy to replicate. Costumes may also include pieces that can be worn again, either in everyday outfits or for future Halloweens.
Dollar Tree
Surprisingly, many costumes can be made by simply looking in the closet. The few remaining pieces you need to complete your look may be found in Campustown at the Dollar Tree. Tiaras, wings, witch hats and masks can all be used as last-minute solutions to costume problems.
Regardless of budget, everyone deserves to have some fun on Halloween and express themselves with a costume. Resources like second-hand stores allow items to see new life and give people the opportunity to be someone new for a night without overspending.
