“Call of Duty” is one of the largest first-person shooter franchises and, much like other Activision games, has been nothing but disappointing for the last 10 years.
Oct. 25, 2024, appears to have changed this.
“Black Ops 6” is the latest “Call of Duty” entry, and for once it’s pretty good.
The biggest change compared to previous games is the new omni-movement abilities. Omni-movement allows players to jump, dive and simultaneously shoot in any direction.
Fluidity in PvP or campaign shooter games is crucial, and this new system makes intense moments infinitely more satisfying. Leaping past doorways or out of windows to snipe the opposition makes you feel like you’re in an action movie.
New weapons were also added, rearranging the meta. In fact, since the official release, several patches have rebalanced different guns, keeping the playstyles fresh.
With that, the PvP modes feel fluid. Most of the maps have a typical three-lane design, which in a few months may begin to feel stale. Hopefully, though, the developers will continue to create new arenas.
This game is set in the Cold War period in 1991, and the map visuals, in all game modes, set the scene well. Without getting into a lot of spoilers, that aforementioned campaign is good.
That might surprise you because, after the last few entries, it’s understandable to be skeptical. There are a handful of glitches and some frustrating bugs, but for any video game these days, inside and outside of the “Call of Duty” franchise, that’s unfortunately typical.
A highlight of the story mode is definitely the kill cam because you don’t have to shoot your target. Watching a throwing knife fly into your opponent is hilarious and fulfilling.
Maybe the most exciting part for long-time fans is the return of a good zombie game mode. It’s been years since anyone has wanted to play more than one or two rounds of zombies, but that has changed with this latest game.
Blazing down hordes of enemies in a well-designed map with variable playstyles is what the people want.
“Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” isn’t perfect, but with a reasonable campaign length, fun PvP and dynamic play, it rests a reasonable case. If you like the first-person shooter style or have played older “Call of Duty” games, this is one to consider picking up.
