‘Every second counts’: Five TV show quotes to live by

Graphic by Audrey Garcia

As someone who is obsessed with multiple TV shows, I have gathered a list of quotes to live by. These sayings got me through some stressful times and have encouraged me to keep going… or they are just fun to say. Below, you will find the top five quotes that are near and dear to my heart.

“Every second counts,” from “The Bear”

While this quote is technically from a sign in the show, rather than being said by one of the characters, it has deeply resonated with me. As someone who spent the majority of their life not wanting to go with the flow and always needing a plan, this quote changed my life. I realized that by needing everything laid out, I was missing out on the small, exciting moments that were right in front of me. I swear by this quote to the point of getting it tattooed in the near future.

“It’s not what the world holds for you, it’s what you bring to it,” from “Anne with an E”

During high school, I often felt like the odd one out within my friend groups and among my classmates. I wasn’t sure if I would ever feel like I belonged, until I watched “Anne with an E.” Anne’s eccentric behavior taught me that the world wasn’t going to hand me anything, I needed to hand something to it. So, I kept standing out, kept being myself despite what anyone else said. Because I bring a lot to the world, and so do you.

“I drink and I know things,” from “Game of Thrones”

You best believe that on my 21st birthday, all I could say was the iconic Tyrion Lannister quote, “I drink and I know things.” Because now I could officially say that I drink and know things. Even though the quote is quite humorous without context, with context, it has a much deeper meaning. In the scene, Tyrion is discussing with the rest of Daenerys Targaryen’s court about how dragons do not do well in captivity. When asked how he knew that, he responded with the quote.

Throughout the show, Tyrion had been doubted due to his appearance, when in reality, they should’ve all been fearing him because of his knowledge. As a woman in leadership, I understand the feeling of being doubted despite knowing a subject. Even though all I do is drink and know things.

“Believe,” From Ted Lasso

Another quote that comes in the form of a sign, this time found above a door. As someone who needs a little bit of Ted Lasso positivity in her life at all times, this quote showed me that I could do just about anything if I believed that good things will come. Not everything will work out, as the show taught me, but as long as you believe in yourself and the people around you, you will never feel defeated.

“Being a Derry Girl is a state of mind,” from “Derry Girls”

No better show displays female, plus one male, friendship than “Derry Girls.” The show perfectly encapsulates what it means to be a young girl growing up and needing your friends at all times. The context of the quote is the Irish girls embracing their British male friend James into their Derry Girls group. To me, it shows that no matter how different you are, when you love a friendship, your bond can never be broken.
