Fret not, “Breaking Bad” fans; you can still have your fix of Walter White’s universe, even if he’s not in it. AMC has commissioned a spinoff prequel series, “Better Call Saul,” that focuses on Walt’s lawyer Saul Goodman before the events of the show.
Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became something of a breakout character on the show, and with his status as a lawyer, it’s no surprise AMC saw series potential in him. In an age where spinoffs seem to be all the rage, from “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” to “Once Upon A Time in Wonderland,” the announcement of “Better Call Saul” makes perfect sense. Fans of “Breaking Bad” may be in denial about the show’s ending, so what better way to keep them tuning in then an entire show about Saul Goodman?
Then again, maybe fans would find a sequel series focusing on the further adventures of Jesse (Aaron Paul) more exciting. It’s hard to really speak for the fanbase, but with a character like Saul, a series may work in his favor. It may not provide the award-winning entertainment that “Breaking Bad” did, but it could at least be fun enough to hold a series.
Only time will tell whether “Better Call Saul” will measure up to it’s parent show, but in the meantime, “Breaking Bad” fans should rejoice at getting further adventures set in this universe. Here’s hoping Saul can deliver something special.
