Students, Marvel fans and comic lovers got a chance to see Irish comic book artist Will Sliney in action through a Zoom event hosted by ACBU.
On Feb. 1, ACBU started the call with a game of Marvel-themed trivia on Kahoot. After trivia, Sliney came in and gave a tutorial on how to draw Spider-Man and gave students advice about drawing characters. He also answered questions about his career and personal life.
ACBU event coordinator Rachel Becker, junior hospitality leadership major, said that students are most likely familiar with Marvel, so having a prominent figure in the industry seemed fitting.
After suggestions for ACBU to host drawing events, Becker alongside junior social work major event coordinator Rebecca Miller decided to invite Sliney to be a guest for the event.
“Rachel and I sat down with our leadership team member and thought of ideas,”
Miller said. “We saw two illustrators in our budget and we thought we have not done that type of event before, unlike the full trivia event.”
Sliney has been an artist for 12 years and is especially known for his comic drawings of Spider-Man.
Sliney spoke about his eight years at Marvel and said that being a comic artist for the company was on his bucket list.
“I pass my stuff off and somebody else colors it and it’s quite amazing to see the colors that are used,” Sliney said. “The [color artists] I work with now are some of the best in the whole industry and often they come up with storytelling colors and other stuff I was not expecting … It’s always amazing to see, so it’s quite cool and probably one of my favorite parts of the [process].”
